2018/2019 Vancouver Branch Calendar

 

  1. "Enjoying the Values of Piano Ensemble: An Introduction to Duet and Duo Piano Repertoire" with Winfried Rompf AND Book Exchange 

~ Monday September 17, 10:30am-12:30pm at Tom Lee Music Downtown

Come to hear about and try out a variety of ensemble pieces; before and after the presentation you’ll be able to browse a selection of free music brought by your colleagues. For those wishing to bring gently used scores for the exchange, please bring the books at 10:00am for the set-up and be prepared to take home what is left over. Tom Lee offers validated parking so you don’t have to carry things too far, please go to http://tomleemusic.ca/freeparking for details.

Non-members fee for this event is $10.

 

  1. Taxation and Business Session with Jessica Somers, CPA CGA 

~ Monday October 15, 2018 10:00am to 12:00pm at Long & McQuade

Jessica Somers will be speaking about taxation and business issues specific to music teachers.Ms. Somers is a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CGA) with over ten years of experience advising freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses in Vancouver on tax, accounting, and business process. She is also the co-founder of Cordova Street Consulting, a new firm in Gastown with a focus on knowledge sharing, outreach, and taking the stress and mystery out of tax.

We are pleased to announce that due to the high interest of the workshop, we would like to make this workshop accessible to as many music teachers in the community as possible so everyone can benefit. Members of the Vancouver branch, you have priority to RSVP from now till Sunday, October 7. RSVP will then be opened to teachers outside of the branch starting Monday, October 8.

~ Sunday December 9, 2018  4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Unitarian Centre in Vancouver (Oak and 49th)

Registration forms will be available in early October, an email reminder will be sent.

IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of the teacher to advise parents and students of the following requirements.

  1. All pieces must be memorized except in the case of accompanists (photocopies CANNOT be used)
  2. Appropriate dress is required: for boys = dress pants, shirts/sweaters and dress shoes; for girls = dresses/skirts//dress pants, blouses/sweaters, and dress shoes.
  3. There is to be NO PHOTOGRAPHY or VIDEO RECORDINGof any kind during the recitals, it is disruptive to the performer and the other members of the audience.

  1. Improvisation with Boris Favre 

~ Monday, May 13 , 2019  at Showcase Pianos (time TBA)

Boris Favre is a trained classical pianist but his true passion is for jazz and world music. He currently performs with children’s entertainer Music with Marnie, Latin-Jazz artist Deborah Ledon, traditional French-Canadian trio Pastiche and as bassist for the Celtic-Funk band Mad Pudding with whom he has toured extensively throughout Canada. Mr. Favre will be leading a hands on workshop for improvising and we’re very excited to be hosting him.

Space permitting, the fee for non-members for this event is $20.

  1. Determining How Best to use the Branch Surplus

The Executive is working to formalize a plan for using the surplus in our bank account. A more detailed report will be presented at the AGM, at which point we will have a plan ready for a vote. Throughout this process our goal has been to been to use the money wisely and effectively for the benefit of as many Vancouver members as possible with an eye to the Branch’s needs in the next five to ten years.

 

  1. Professional Development Bursaries (PDB)

The guidelines for the Professional Development Bursaries are still being discussed, however, like the above item, a plan will be ready for presentation at the 2019 AGM. The first PDB will cover the 2019 calendar year with a January, 2020 deadline (TBA). The amount to distribute will fluctuate according to the finances of each year but for the inaugural year, the Executive has voted to set aside $2,500.
