The Vancouver/Burnaby Branch is an affiliate of the BC Registered Music Teachers' Association (BCRMTA). Membership in the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association (CFMTA) is automatically granted once an application is accepted.

Below is a partial list of requirements for Membership in the BCRMTA. For a full list of requirements and benefits click here to visit the Provincial website.

  • the teacher must be 18 years of age
  • the teacher must hold a music teacher's certificate, or a music teacher’s diploma from any school of music recognized by the BC Provincial Council, or a university level music degree with a major in the instrument or subject of instruction stated in the application
  • the teacher must have a record of four years’ of instruction in subjects recognized by the BC Provincial Board of Examiner

REFERRAL INCENTIVE - New!

As a new policy, any member in good standing who refers a first time RMTA applicant to the Vancouver/Burnaby Branch will receive a $30 Long & McQuade gift card. This offer does not apply when teachers are transferring from another Branch and/or another Provincial Association.

BCRMTA Associate Teacher’s Award

Each year, the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association presents an award to the student receiving the highest aggregate mark in the Associate Teachers Diploma offered by four conservatories: BC Conservatory of Music, Canada Conservatory, Royal Conservatory of Music. As of 2022, there is an "open category" available to graduates of college or university programs. The award consists of a $125 scholarship and a one-year free membership in the BCRMTA. Award winners must have been studying with a BCRMTA member; recipients are notified in the Spring of the year following their final exam. Click here for more information.

RMT members in good standing from other provinces in Canada need only apply for a transfer into the Vancouver/Burnaby Branch through the provincial branch. Contact the Registrar at registrar@bcrmta.bc.ca for more information.
