The following is a list of benefits offered to Vancouver/Burnaby Branch RMT members and their students.
- Online Teachers’ Referral Service
- Prospective students can use the “Find a Teacher” link to access the Branch directory and search for teachers. Members are listed alphabetically with their geographical area and their registered disciplines. A contact email and phone number is included but either can be removed by request. Information is secure from webcrawlers and cannot be downloaded.
- Liability Insurance and Tenants’ Legal Liability Insurance
- Membership in the BCRMTA includes $5,000,000 liability coverage (per occurrence) to protect you and your students wherever you teach.
- There is also $500,000 Tenant’s Legal Liability coverage, as required by landlords in commercial venues.
- Monthly Events
- Monthly events are planned from September to June. These meetings generally come in the form of lectures and workshops but December and June Luncheons for net working are organized as well as occasional masterclasses. Check the Monthly Bulletin for upcoming events. Non-members may attend events for a fee paid at the door and retired Vancouver members are also welcome to attend for a nominal fee.
- Scholarships and Bursaries
- Student bursaries from $500 to $1000 are offered to students experiencing financial challenges in their music studies. Click here for more information and to access the current application package.
- Student Scholarships are also offered through the Student Performers’ Guild Festival and the Canada Music Week Festival Click here to access details.
- Professional Development Grants up to $200 are offered to members for lessons, conferences, and other professional development activities. Click here for more information and to access the current application package.
- Monthly Bulletins/Email Notices
- The Vancouver/Burnaby Branch notifies members of events though our Facebook page; and through regular mail notices. For those members who do not/can not access the internet, mailed notification is possible. Please contact the Information Coordinator for details.
- Vancouver/Burnaby members receive digital copies of the BC Provincial newsletter Progressions, the CFMTA Newsletter, Canadian Music Teacher, and a monthly “Of Note” email from the CFMTA to communicate important information and upcoming deadlines.
- Student recitals
- Two Student recitals are held every year, free of charge to students of Branch and STA members.
- A Celebration of Excellence recital is held once a year to honour students who have achieved 90% or higher on their practicial exams from the previous year.

- Student Master Classes
- When opportunities arise, teachers are contacted to provide students for masterclasses. While these events are an opportunity for teachers to observe master clinicians at work, they are also invaluable for the participating students.
- Branch Festivals
- Two festivals are available for the students of Branch and STA members, click here for dates and details.
- The Student Performers' Guild (SPG) Festival is held each May.
- The Canada Music Week (CMW) Festival is held during Canada Music Week each November.
- Student Teacher Auxiliary
- The Student Teacher Auxiliary is open to students who are studying with a Vancouver/Burnaby Branch member and are currently working towards a teaching diploma. Monthly meetings, workshops and recitals are presented under the direction of a master teacher. Click here for more information on the STA.
- Pedagogy Awards
- Each year, the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association presents awards to the student receiving the highest aggregate mark in the Associate Teachers Diploma offered by three conservatories: BC Conservatory of Music, Canada Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatory of Music.
- At the Branch level, the Mary Tickner Pedagogy Award consists of a $300 scholarship and a one-year free membership in the BCRMTA. Recipients must apply in January/Februry of the year following their final exam and they must have been studying with a Vancouver/Burnaby Branch member. Click here for more information
- At the Provincial level, the award consists of a $125 scholarship and a one-year free membership in the BCRMTA. Award winners must have been studying with a BCRMTA member; recipients are notified in the Spring of the year following their final exam.
- Discounts on Concerts and Conventions
- RMT members receive a 15 - 20% discount on Vancouver Recital Society ticket prices depending on the performance. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra offers members the opportunity to purchase up to two tickets for $20 each in section 'A' or next best available section for any regular season concert (excludes Special concerts and Dress circle seating).
- RMT members receive a discounted rate at all Provincial and National conferences.
